As the nationwide protest against the proposed amendment in the Right to Information (RTI) Act is gaining momentum, the CPM has extended its support as well.

“Protests led by social activists like Anna Hazare and others against the amendment is justified and the party is with them,” Subhashini Ali, CPM Central Committee member, told the Herald.

The Act brought transparency in government functioning and made officials and politicians accountable, she added. “The amendment would make the Act meaningless as its essence would be lost. It would hamper the objective of the Act,” she said.

Ali said that earlier it was considered that ruling party politicians were against transparency but now “the pressure from the bureaucratic lobby” for the amendment had exposed those actually against transparency and accountability.

“We have amply made it clear to the UPA government that we are against the amendment and would oppose it in Parliament,” she said.
