Past Action Items

This section contains all the action items undertaken and events organized by volunteers from AID, Asha and other like-minded organizations in the US, to support, endorse and enhance the RTI Act.

The success of our campaigns which were run under the guidance of our grassroots partners in India, clearly illustrates how EVERY VOICE AND ACTION COUNTS.

  • RTI Amendments  ( 5 items )

This section contains all the action items that were undertaken during the proposed amendments approved by the Indian cabinet during the 2006 monsoon session (July-August 2006) of the Parliament.

The Indian government had to take back the Amendments that was approved by the Cabinet, after widespread protests, petitioning, faxing, emailing took place simultaneously in India and around the world. Over 6500 people signed a petition to the PM, over 850 faxed the PMO, almost 250 emails were sent and 50 phone calls made to the PMO, and 73 concerned Indian citizens joined a relay global hunger strike.

  • Functioning of CIC  ( 4 items )

Unhappy with the functioning of the Chief Information Commissioner, volunteers from AID in the US, carried out extensive research and analysis of the decisions given by the CIC in the past few months, and petitioned the President to question the CIC about the implementation of the Act. Thereafter, the President met with a delegation of our Indian partners and listened to all their concerns. Since then, there has been a visible change in the functioning of the CIC, who for the first time imposed penalties on faulting officers.
