CIC asks Delhi HC to furnish details on appointment of its PIO Print E-mail

The Delhi High Court came under the RTI scanner after the Central Information Commission (CIC) held that people have a right to know the procedure that went behind appointment of its Public Information Officer (PIO).

"The public has a right to know the procedure that went into appointment of PIO and matters that weighed with the Hon'ble Justices deliberating on the issue," Chief Information Commissioner Wajahat Habibullah said.

25 pesticides banned in India, others face partial curbs Print E-mail

New Delhi : Some 25 pesticides are banned for manufacture, import and use in India. Two other pesticides and formulations are banned for use in the country but their manufacture is allowed for export, it has been revealed under the Right to Information (RTI) Act.

As India grapples with this complex issue at the intersection of agricultural productivity and environmental safety, the government has also acknowledged that there are four pesticide formulations banned for "import, manufacture and use" and another seven pesticides on the "withdrawn" list.

RTI Expose - Dow wants to pass Bhopal buck to India Print E-mail

US multinational Dow Chemicals, facing a criminal suit over the 1984 Bhopal gas disaster, has been trying to get the Indian embassy in Washington to persuade the government to clean up the site of the erstwhile Union Carbide plant, according to information acquired after invoking the Right to Information (RTI) Act.

The matter came to light last month after the Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Stationery and Karmachari Sangh, an association of survivors and activists, made use of the RTI act to seek copies of the letter from the Planning Commission.

The Right to Information Act has come to the rescue of a former trustee of a charitable educational trust who was illegally removed by presenting signatures of dead and fictitious members.

The original papers of the trust's no-confidence motion, which were in the charity commissioner's office, were substituted with the forged papers in alleged collusion with the office staff. The charity commissioner's office then passed an order to oust Qamar S Qazi, the trustee.
